Why Tithe?

By Pastor Mike Mings

In Malachi God told His people that they had been robbing Him.  They said how have we robbed you Lord.  God said in tithes and offerings and then God said that they had brought a curse upon themselves because they had kept for themselves what belonged to God.

The tithe belongs to God.  Tithe means 10%.  God said we are to give to Him first.  He said the first is holy.  That is the first tenth of everything we make or receive is to be given back to God.  The Lord tells us that if we don’t give to Him what belongs to Him then we are causing a curse to fall upon us.

This scripture in Malachi goes on to tell us however that we should “Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.  And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the Lord of hosts.  And all nations shall call you blessed.”

About the curse.  The Bible says that the devil goes about as a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour.  When we are not faithful in our giving we open the door to the devil and God is not able to rebuke the devourer for our sakes.  This is kind of a scary thought since Satan comes but for to steak, kill and destroy.  However when we are faithful to tithe and to give offerings (above and beyond our tithe) as the Lord directs, then God is able to rebuke the devil (devourer) for our sakes in all areas of our lives.

Paul said in 2 Corinthians Chapter 9 v.8 that as we are faithful in our giving then God is able to make all grace abound toward us so that we can have as much as we need in all areas of our lives.  Everything that’s contained in God’s grace is able to be poured out upon us by God, as we are faithful in our giving.

Sometimes we can’t understand why sickness and disease continues to hold on to us.  We are doing everything we know to do, aren’t we?  Well if we are robbing God of what belongs to Him then the door is open for the devourer to steal, kill and destroy.  We are tying God’s hands to rebuke the devourer for our sakes by our disobedience to give God what belongs to Him.

Why does God need our money?  God has always used the tithe to support His ministers as they give themselves to the work of the ministry.  In Old Testament times it was the Levitical Priesthood.  Even before the law Abraham gave a tenth part of all to Melchisedec, the priest of the most high God and He blessed Abraham.  Today it is the ministers God calls and anoints to do His work.  The tithe was to be brought into the storehouse where it was distributed by the priest (pastor) as the Lord directed.  Most ministers and ministries today acknowledge that the tithe should go to the local church you are attending unless God speaks to you and tells you to give part of your tithe somewhere else.  However usually our other giving would not be part of our tithe but rather offerings the Lord directs us to give.

It’s hard for Pastors to deal with this subject because many times people will become offended and say that those preachers only care about money.  Well most preachers could be making a lot more money in secular jobs than they ever do preaching the gospel.  Because we don’t want to offend people we go on and preach everything else as we watch people being devoured by the Devil in many areas of their lives just because we are afraid they will get mad at us and leave the church.  These things ought not to be.

When things begin to go wrong in our lives such as our family being destroyed, sickness, disease or infirmity holding on to us, finances in turmoil or any other way the devil comes to destroy our lives, remember that one of the things that opens the door to the Devil is our disobedience in giving to God those things that belong to Him.

God wants to deliver us.  God wants to set us free.  God wants to bless us.  God wants to rebuke sickness, disease and infirmity off our lives but when we bring a curse of the devourer upon our lives, that Jesus came to set us free from, by our choosing to disobey God, then we tie His hands concerning His intervention on our behalf.

The reason I’m writing this article is that the word of the Lord came to me this morning when I woke up concerning curses upon people’s lives.  He said that many people are not able to receive their healing because they are holding back their tithe from God.  He said that many people’s homes are in turmoil because they are holding back their tithe from God.  He said that when we choose to keep what belongs to God then He is not able to rebuke the devourer for our sakes.  The door is wide open for the devil to come in and wreak havoc in all areas of our lives, not just in our finances.

I want you to know that I’m not writing this article as any kind of manipulation or control but that I love each and every one of you and pray for you daily.  As we walk in Christ and are led by the Spirit we fulfill the righteousness of the law.  Giving to God what belongs to Him is righteous.  I pray blessings upon all who read this article and obey the Word of the Lord.  “Be ye therefore doers of the Word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.” James 1:22

So what if I haven't been tithing but I want to start, does the curse stay on me because of my past?  No, just repent and as we do the right thing, we put in motion the blessings of God that belong to us as heirs of God.  Begin doing the right thing and God doesn't even remember our past failures.  Thank you Lord!

New Covenant Tithing

Should we tithe under the New Covenant? The answer is an emphatic YES!!
The tithe is 10% of what we make. God established this even before the law and the purpose of it is to promote the work of God here in the earth realm.  God has promised to bless us as a result of our giving.

Under the old covenant people were justified by their works. They had to do the work of giving so they could be blessed.

Under the new covenant we are justified by faith and we receive the promises of God by appropriating the grace that Christ has already provided for us.  However Christ didn't come to destroy the works of the Law but to fulfill them.  As a result of our faith in Christ, as we walk in love, we are able to fulfill the righteousness of the Law in the earth realm.

Here's the deal.  If you tithe as an act of obligation it becomes an act of legalism and you are placing yourself under the law.  BUT if you tithe as an act of faith expecting to receive the blessings God promised and are a cheerful giver, then your tithe is acceptable to the Lord and therefore BLESSED.

Under the dispensation of grace we don't receive because of our works, otherwise we would be able to boast of what we have done, but we receive by faith and the works are a result of our faith and therefore we are BLESSED OF GOD!

Motive is everything. LIVE TO GIVE, and expect to be blessed so you'll have more to give to the work of the Lord.  But don't give out of greed thinking you'll receive big bucks, that you can lavish on your own fleshly desires.  This kind of giving the Lord will not bless.  God's word is clear "you ask and receive not because you asked amiss, that you may consume it upon your own lusts".

God wants to bless you, so give of your tithes and offerings in faith expecting to be blessed in ALL areas of your life and God will be able to pour you out a blessing that there won't be room enough to receive it and since you now have authority over the devil you can rebuke the devourer for your own sake and God will back you with his power.  "Whatsoever you bind on earth, will be bound in heaven and whatsoever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven".

"Give and it shall be given to you, good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over shall men give into your bosom.

Love in Christ,
